Ginger ' A Natural Medicine

Versatile ginger beer, brewed by Bundaberg Brewed Drinks, is a refreshing beverage with a taste that can be enjoyed alone, or used as a mixer with a range of alcoholic drinks. When the ginger root made its way into the drink manufacturing process, it piqued the taste buds of consumers who were tired of sugary drinks, and wanted something with a more robust flavour.

Even though drinking ginger beer as a drink can simply be for pleasure, there are other reasons we should be grateful for ginger beer existing and this is due to the many other healthy benefits it creates for the human body. This ancient plant originated in Southeast Asia and has been a staple of Chinese medicine for 2, 500 years.

The active ingredients, shogaol, gingerol and zingiberene occur naturally in ginger and have anti-oxidant properties. Ginger root is very low in cholesterol and sodium, and is also a source of dietary fibre, vitamin E, vitamin B6, iron, magnesium, potassium and selenium. It is also high in manganese.

With all of these natural "goodies" built in, it is no wonder that ginger is very effective at assisting with a whole range of unpleasant ailments. The following are just some of the benefits:

> Neutralises stomach acids and provides an overall toning benefit to the stomach muscles. Research shows that the gingerols in ginger block the vomit reflex. This makes it particularly effective in relieving nausea and motion sickness.

> Helps with the promotion of a healthier cardiovascular system by lowering the "stickiness" of platelets which helps the blood to flow more freely around the circulatory system. Some caution needs to be applied here, as this can cause people undergoing surgery to bleed excessively.

> As a natural anti-inflammatory, the oil extracted from the ginger root is useful for massaging arthritic joints to relieve pain and inflammation. It works by reducing prostaglandins, the natural pain-causing compounds.

> Prostaglandins also cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain, so ginger can give relief to migraine sufferers.

> Useful to relieve the effects of allergies, the common cold and other respiratory conditions. As a natural anti-histamine and decongestant, ginger provides relief by dilating constricted bronchial tubes.

> Using ginger as tea has been used for a many many years to relieve heartburn, and in Chinese medicine, when taken with brown sugar, ginger tea has been used to relieve menstrual cramps.

Many of the benefits listed above have also been recognised as within the results of clinical study here and in various parts of the world, and inspiring new research is currently being undertaken into the benefits of ginger roots and it's ability to stop the spread of some types of cancer.

Ginger is available as a brewed tea drink, in powder and tablet form, in its raw state i.e. the ginger root, which can be crushed or sliced, or as a delightful beverage. By including ginger as part of a regular diet, some or all of the above benefits will be evident.

Allergy sufferers can drink Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Brisbane and ginger beer without fear, as ginger is a natural anti-histamine. Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Qld also relieves cold symptoms as ginger helps to expand bronchial tubes. See Kelly's Distributors.
